To Drive or Not to Drive?- That is the question

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

So your typing away on your FB page planning a big night out with a group of friends. Dinner, dancing, a show or maybe your planning to just hang at your favorite bar and whoop it up. It’s all good! You’ve worked hard all week and you deserve it!  But…have you thought about driving?

For some, driving is the last if not totally forgotten element of planning. Usually it comes at the end of the night after several drinks and a good time has been had. Keys are being passed around… “I can’t drive…how bout you?” Or even worse a friend says “I’m fine” who is clearly not and drives away leaving everyone worried. This is a complete drag & buzz kill for the entire group not to mention the severe and potentially fatal consequences that could follow!

If a designated driver is unavailable three other options come to mind.

1. Public transportation: This option is certainly the most inexpensive of all. If you live in or close to the city it’s almost perfect! It does produce some drawbacks. If your dressed to the nines you probably wouldn’t appreciate waiting in a dirty subway for a train. Especially during the cold winter months. Personal safety can also be a concern.

2. Taxi: Taxi’s offer a convenient, safe mode of traveling for your big night. They are readily available in just about every city. Hopefully you get a well maintained, clean cab with a considerate driver. Price does vary however depending on where your starting point is. It can be a bit costly if your heading into the city from the burbs.

3.  A hired car or limousine: Travel in style! It’s all the rage! There is nothing like being picked up at your doorstep knowing that one less worry is behind you. The driver opens the door and there to greet you are your friends. Your night has begun as soon as you take a seat! At the end of the evening you can feel secure in knowing that you and your friends will be returning home safely. Although expensive for most couples to afford alone, the price is dramatically reduced when traveling as a group thus splitting the bill. For a group of 8-10 people a round trip 5 hour night out is about $45-$55 per person including tip. If your starting from the burbs the cost of a taxi could actually be more expensive. When considering not having to wander the streets or pay for parking and getting door to door service, the limo option is a home run! Now don’t get me wrong, you can’t afford this type  of luxury every night you go out. But for that big night out with friends…its perfect!

Be safe, be happy, enjoy your big night out!

Enjoy the Night!

Decks, Patios and Roof Tops- Outdoor Dining

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Its official, Spring is here! Flowers will bloom, warmer days are near and outdoor dining will soon begin. There’s nothing like dining outdoors! On a deck by the ocean is by far the most exhilarating! The smell of the salty air, a beautiful moon lit view of a harbor with gently rocking boats tied to the dock while enjoying a great meal and a cool drink with a special someone. It doesn’t get any better!

Dining on a patio or sidewalk café at a local restaurant can be enjoyable as well. On a warm night the sights and sounds of the neighborhood as well as people watching can make for a great dining experience.

Many cities are now offering roof top dining options. The cosmopolitan skyline views from above with all the hustle and bustle below is a lot of fun. Honking horns, screaming sirens and noisy traffic can be music to city dweller ears enjoying a meal or sipping a drink with friends!

Whatever you prefer, Spring has sprung and it’s time to have fun!

Enjoy the night!

St. Patrick’s Day- Music, Food & Drink

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Irish folk lore tells us that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland and converted it’s people to Christianity. Every year we celebrate his life  with parades, feasts and a few pints at the local pub.  The wearing of the green, leprechauns, shamrocks, corned beef, green beer and Irish whiskey all part of a proper celebration!

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

For Mrs. Niteowl and I the best way to celebrate is bellied up to the bar in a busy, traditional Irish pub with plenty of boisterous folks singing, talking and enjoying good pub fare and live Irish music. We’ve found that late afternoon or early evening is best especially if there is a work day to follow!

St. Patrick’s Day for me has always been about camaraderie. For one day a year those of Irish decent and some without a hint of Irish DNA come together and celebrate Ireland’s patron saint with music, food & drink!

Let us know how will you’ll be celebrating St. Patrick’s day! As always your comments are welcome!

Enjoy the night!

Ball Caps, Dining & Manners

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

For the past few years while dining at several different types of restaurants I’ve noticed young men (20 somethings) wearing ball caps, not only inside waiting but at the table eating. These hats are worn forward, backwards, to the left, to the right & kicked back high on the head. Most adorn the logo of a professional sports team. While others offer vulgar designs and foul language written on them. Recently, I’ve noticed men my age (40s) are doing the same thing. I just don’t get it! Maybe it’s the way I was brought up or my time in the military that’s made me a bit cranky. In any case I find it completely inappropriate and ill mannered.

Are manners old fashioned? No, manners are a sign of respect for one’s self and those around them. They exude character and integrity for those who use them. For good manners to continue they must be learned by example. Good manners applied today will be learned and passed down for generations tomorrow.

Hats are worn as part of a uniform or inclement weather. They do not belong at the table of a restaurant. Gentlemen, remember to remove your “covers” while going indoors.

Enjoy the night!
