Barstool “Blackout” parties leaving Boston, founder says

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Barstool Sports blogger Dave Portnoy says he’s pulling the plug on his popular and much-protested “Blackout” raves at the House of Blues, claiming club security and state liquor agents turned the screws on Wednesday night’s party — and ended up turning away about three-fourths of his paid customers.

“It just doesn’t seem like Boston is friendly to nightlife of our sort, at least,” Portnoy told the Herald. “It goes against everything our brand is trying to do, if we’re doing events where we know kids are spending money and getting turned Barstool Blackout Touraway.”

Portnoy said Wednesday night’s sold-out shindig, which was geared toward Boston College students, turned sour when security barred drinking-age guests who showed up with booze on their breath or with out-of-state IDs. Out of 2,000 tickets sold, he said, only about 500 ravers got inside.

Three investigators from the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission were on hand and confiscated approximately 300 fake IDs, an agency spokesman said. The agents trolled the crowd for underage drinkers and anyone who appeared intoxicated.

“We were there to provide support , apply our expertise and to provide an appropriate level of enforcement,” said Jon Carlisle, a spokesman for the state treasurer’s office, which oversees the alcohol-control commission. A spokesman for Live Nation, which operates the House of Blues, could not be reached for comment.

Portnoy’s seven-year-old blog — whose regular features include rating the attractiveness of female teachers charged with having sex with students — has caught fire with the frat lot nationwide, leading him to stage an ongoing series of dance raves, mostly up and down the East Coast. The $20-a-head dance parties have also drawn feminist protests, with critics saying his posts objectify women and promote a rape culture.

The Herald reported last month that there have been arrests, assaults and drunken incidents at several Blackout events across the country. The tour, which features Chicago-based DJ Dante, returns to Boston for two sold-out shows at the House of Blues on March 30 and April 6.

Portnoy says he plans to honor the two upcoming House of Blues dates currently scheduled — Saturday and April 6 — then move his Massachusetts parties elsewhere.“We did an event in Worcester, and we’d happily go back there,” he said.

Five Mad Men Lifestyle Choices that Will Ruin Your Life

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Mad MenAMC must be cha-cha-chaing all the way to the bank as its biggest hit Mad Men returns for its fifth season this weekend. And holy highballs, we couldn’t be more excited! In the world of Mad Men, advertising is king and the white-collared, trench-coated man is the ruler of his own domain. It’s 1965, and there are no need for mancaves; it’s a mad man’s world.*

But it’s 2012, you mod(ern) man you, and the sleazy, sexy, life-shortening practices of yesteryear have given way to more sensible, balanced and healthier lifestyles. And what were once the rites of any hardworking corporate brotherhood have now become obvious liabilities. So here are five classic workplace practices to remind you it’s no longer Don Draper’s world.

*Except when, as in the pilot, we’re reminded that it’s hard to be a man.

Drinking … on the Job

What’s a happy hour? Draper and his team would’ve made you the laughingstock of New York City if you turned down a drink at a meeting. Really, who waits until after work for cocktails? Nothing says “working lunch” like a whiskey, or two, or three, or a four before punching out…or blacking out. Today, imbibe your spirit of choice anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and you’ll find yourself on forced temporary leave and signing up for a twelve-step program.

Filtering All That Clean Air with Cigarettes

It’s 1965, gentlemen; there is no such thing as a Designated Smoking Area. In fact, the Marlboro Man has just made it onto the scene and the iconic image is everywhere; in the trains, on TV, on billboards, even in advertisements at the hospital, yes, hospital. So smoke away, it’s the cool thing to do. Smoke like it’s going out of style. But it’s 2012, guys, so before you light up, go find yourself a hidden little spot about three blocks from your office, nice and private … and away from helpless children!

Gorging on High-Fat Foods Like Your Life Depended on It Mad Men

Monday is meatloaf, Tuesday is tater casserole, and Wednesday is whiskey for dinner. Thus was the doctor-recommended daily diet you strictly followed in the ’60’s. Unaware of the lifetime of health problems one would incur, eating a heavy, lard-laden meal was the responsible thing to do. Follow that bleeding porterhouse with a bottle of your favorite scotch and you’ve got yourself a perfect night in with the wife and kids. Today, you’d be lucky if your doctor gives you the green light on an 8 oz. steak. Actually, you’d be lucky if you’ve managed to keep your cholesterol level down and those heart attacks at bay.

Having an Illicit Adulterous Affair with the Entire Female Population of Manhattan

Don Draper did it and ended up destroying his marriage to Betty. But that was 1965, folks. In 2012…well…actually no further comment.

Informing Your Secretary She Looks Good Enough to Eat Mad Men Don Draper

Two words: YOU’RE FIRED!

So remember it’s 2012, not 1965. Go get yourself a new pair of running shoes, eat some vegetables, and throw out those half-empty bottles of the stuff you tell the little one is good for cleaning mirrors. But make sure you give yourself enough time for a post-run stretch before you get comfy on the couch, with your kale chips and kombucha, because the fifth season of Mad Men is going to be great, and Don Draper will once again reign gloriously supreme.

‘The Hunger Games’ great midnight snack for Boston fans

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

The critics have had their say, but early this morning fans of “The Hunger Games” were able to weigh in on the big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best selling young adult novel.

The verdict?

“It was awesome,” said Boston University freshman Anna Martin, 19, after catching a midnight screening at Regal The Hunger GamesFenway Stadium 13.

“It was just like the book,” said friend and classmate Samantha Lussier, 19.

The Fenway movie theater used thirteen screens to show the highly anticipated film in the wee hours of the morning. Seating began as early as 8:28 p.m.

Earlier this week, “The Hunger Games” set an advance ticket sale record on Fandango.com, surpassing sales for the “Twilight” franchise.

With most screenings sold out, a 3:15 a.m. showing was added, but Jamaica Plain residents Andrew Vives and Lauren Cullin lucked out when friends gave them their midnight tickets at the last minute.

“I just read all three of (the books) in the last three days,” said Cullin, 29. “I definitely enjoyed the movie. It was pretty good.”

Vives, 25, was skeptical going in, but was won over.

“I liked the movie better than the books,” he said.

Criticisms were few and far between among the fans milling outside the Brookline Avenue cinema.

“It was kind of hard to watch because of the camera,” said Boston College freshman Brenna Cass, 19, of shaky footage. “It was like ‘Cloverfield’.”

“They took out some of the back story, so if you didn’t read the books you wouldn’t understand (some of it),” said friend Greg Kane, 18.

But the consensus was that star Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone”) knocked it out of the park as Katniss Everdeen, the teen heroine at the heart of this post-apocolyptic tale that pits child against child in a fight to the death.

“She had such dedication to the character,” said Karina Masabanda, 21, of Portland, Maine. “She just took this character and ran with it. The role was made for her.”

“Everything in the movie was made with real love and care for the original source material,” said Masabanda, a freshman at Southern Maine Community College.

Bank of America Pavilion to bring 70′s & 80′s favorites to town

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

As we dry out from the never ending rain storm, today’s sunshine reminds us that summertime is just around the corner and with it concert season too. For fans of late 70′s/early 80′s rock, the Bank of America Pavilion will offer plenty of nostalgia shows this summer. REO Speedwagon, Pat Benetar, Styx, Foreigner, Kansas, Chicago, the Doobie Brothers, Jethro Till and Earth, Wind & Fire will all make their way to the Boston this summer for shows at the harbor side venue.Pat Benatar

REO Speedwagon and Pat Benatar will bring their “Love on The Run Tour” to the Bank of America Pavilion on Sunday, August 29. Tickets which range in price from $28.50 to $60, are now on sale through Live Nation. A special 4-pack of tickets are available for $28.75 each.

Styx and Foreigner will take to the road together this summer for a co-headlining jaunt with special guests Kansas. Together, they’ll play the Pavilion on Sunday, June 20. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $25 to $45, are now on sale through Live Nation. Last fall, Foreiger released their first album of all new material in 15 years, Can’t Slow Down. The new album also marks their first with lead singer Kelly Hansen.

Chicago and The Doobie Brothers, who previously toured together 2 years ago, will hit the Pavilion on Tuesday, July 6. Like their tour in 2008, fans can expect both bands to play individual sets before teaming up for a set together to close out the show. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $42.50 to $79, are now on sale though Live Nation. Fans can also purchase a 4-pack of tickets for $48.75 each. Chicago’s most recent release was 2008′s Chicago XXXII: Stone of Sisyphus. Produced by Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band, the album was finally released after a 15-year delay as Warner Bros. Records refused to release it in 1994. The Doobie Brothers are reportedly working on their first studio album in a decade and followup to 2000′s Sibling Rivalry.

Not all 70′s and 80′s acts are teaming up for co-headliners as both Earth, Wind & Fire and Jethro Tull will come to Boston on their own.

Most recently, band members Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson participated in the recording of the “We Are the World 25 for Haiti” single.

Jethro Tull comes to town on Tuesday, June 15. Tickets are now on sale and range in price from $30 to $60 through Live Nation. Special 4-packs are available for $33.75 each.

Really, forget the green beer. If you want to drink beer like the Irish a pint of Guinness will do. If beer isn’t in your sites, you might try one these cocktails and shooters as a toast to the Irish. Travel Like a Celebrity: A Sleek Black Limo and Driver Are Waiting for You

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Uber, the new, high-tech, luxury black car limo service, makes it easy and somewhat affordable to travel like a celebrity.

Have you ever tried to hail a taxi in NYC on a freezing Saturday night?

Limo & Paparazzi

Have you ever encountered a long taxi line outside Grand Central Station when you’re already late for an appointment? Some days, there just aren’t enough taxis to go around. But if you own a mobile phone, have a major credit card, and like to splurge on small luxuries now and then, you may want to sign up for Uber — the newish, on-demand black car service that allows you to travel like a celebrity.

I tried the service on a whim. A friend had told me about Uber a few months ago and she raved about it. She warned me it was a little pricey, perhaps 1½-2 times cost of a traditional taxi fare but said the luxury was well worth it, when you needed it. Soon after, I downloaded the Uber app on my iPhone and enrolled my credit card information—-just waiting for that proverbial rainy day.

When a Google Offer popped up in my inbox offering $40 worth of Uber service for $19, I broke down and purchased the offer on a whim. (I’m a Maxxinista who can’t resist a bargain). Now I had $40 credit burning a hole in my Uber account.

This past week, my husband and I were having dinner at a restaurant near Madison Park in Manhattan and we planned to visit a friend on the West Side afterward. The President was in town the same evening so I worried about getting a taxi. After we paid the dinner bill, I opened the Uber app on my iPhone. A map popped up with a message asking me to confirm or reset my pickup location, which was already there via GPS. (You can also access Uber by a text message.)

Then I received a message saying an Uber driver, named Selvon, had been dispatched and was three minutes away.  As we walked to the restaurant door, I was able to watch the route our driver took on my iPhone map and knew he had just rounded the corner to meet us. He showed up in a shiny, immaculately clean, black Suburban SUV with tinted windows and comfy leather seats. He asked us where we wanted to go and was prepared to take us anywhere. When we told him the address, he entered it into his GPS.

He could have just as easily been a brand ambassador for his employer because he was so enthusiastic about his work and as charming as could be. Working for Uber the last five months, he’s driven celebrities, sports stars, fashion models, you name it—-and me. One reason why he may have appeared so happy is that his wages are higher than regular taxi drivers, and he can choose which calls he wants to pursue when they show up on his screen. Unlike taxis, Uber vehicles can’t be hailed from the curb; they have to be ordered by phone.

Selvon drove carefully, unrushed, without any of the erratic weaving endemic to NYC taxi cabs. When we arrived at our destination, he entered “Trip Completed” on his touch screen. With that information, my account was automatically charged $26 for the trip (which included his tip) and he thanked us. (Fares are based on some formula based on time and miles driven. The service also offers flat fares to area airports.) No money ever passed hands. My receipt popped up instantaneously on my iPhone as well as an opportunity to rate my driver. I gave him five stars out of five.

I looked up at the screen on our driver’s dashboard and was a bit taken aback when I realized he had also  rated me. “What basis do you have for rating passengers?” I asked, a bit sheepishly.

“Personality,” he said. “You folks were good company.” And he gave us a 5-star rating as well. He confided that he never picks up passengers with a rating less than three.

Sure made my day. I can’t wait for the next chance I have to use the remaining $14 credit on my account. If I’m lucky, Uber may even send a stretch limo.

First launched in June 2010 in San Francisco, Uber now operates in New York City, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, DC, and Paris and has funding to expand across North America, Europe and Asia. Check out their website to find out more about Uber or sign up. You can find out promotional offers by following Uber on on Twitter

Top 5 Craziest Beers

Monday, March 12th, 2012

As beer companies try to expand their drinking base, you’ll see a lot of novelty beers out there aimed at non-traditional drinkers – weird concept beers, fruity blends, or super-sweet beers. While you might raise your eyebrow at some of the stuff on tap these days, none of them can match these five total oddballs of the beer world.

5. Oyster Stout
Oyster Beer

An “Oyster Stout” has been a term for many ages—the combination of oysters and a stout was a common meal. But it wasn’t until the late 1920s that someone decided to put the Oysters inside the brew itself. Porterhouse’s version is actually pretty drinkable, but don’t picture all the slimy shells that used to be in the liquid you’re pouring down your throat.

Cave Creek Chili Beer4. Cave Creek Chili Beer

Speaking of combining things that are normally kept separate, why pair spicy foods with beer when you can just throw a pepper into the beer itself? With a smell like salsa and a taste like heartburn, Crazy Ed’s masterpiece is not for… well, probably anyone.

3. Mamma Mia! Pizza Beer Mamma Mia Pizza Beer

Some brews are a good idea, and some are just disgusting. We’re pretty sure this beer falls into the second category. It’s made with a pizza in a tea bag steeping during the brew. Our condolences go out to the pizzas that had to give their lives to make this monstrosity.

Wostyntje Beer2. Wostyntje

Beer and pretzels, mustard pretzels, mustard beer? Some logic went pretty screwy here. But the Belgians, known for their top-quality beers, have actually made this one somewhat drinkable. Of course, those craving mustard in their beer probably aren’t too picky about quality.

1. Bilk Bilk Beer

To no one’s surprise, the Japanese have invented something crazy. From Abashiri—the same brewery that makes blue beer—comes Bilk. It’s milk combined with beer. Milk producers were throwing away huge quantities of milk due to disinterest from consumers, so the brewery decided to avoid wasting it and mix it into their beer. Gentleman, once again: Japan.

Iron Maiden to rock Mansfield with Alice Cooper

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Iron Maiden have revealed plans for a special summer tour featuring guest opener Alice Cooper. The metal legends will bring their “Maiden England” world tour to Massachusetts for a performance at the Comcast Center in Mansfield on Tuesday, June 26. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $35 to $75, are on sale through Live Nation.

The “Maiden England” world tour will closely mirror, in terms of production and content, the original 1988 concert video of the same name, shot on the “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son” tour. It also marks the third chapter in the “History of Iron Maiden” touring chronology, a journey which began in 2004 with “The Early Days” DVD and subsequent Early Days tour in 2005. Part two followed in 2008 with the “Live After Death” DVD, the seminal 1984 concert recorded at Long Beach Arena during the “World Slavery” tour, and the band embarking on their “Somewhere Back In Time” world tour in 2008 and 2009.

“We have great fun playing the History of Maiden Tours because it gives us an opportunity between new albums to go out and play songs from our earlier catalogue,” explained lead singer Bruce Dickinson in a press release. “It’s always fantastic seeing the crowd reaction from a new generation of fans who have never experienced some of these tracks performed live before, and of course we know our longstanding fans will enjoy seeing the original Seventh Son Tour re-visited – with many other surprises!”

The band intends to perform about two thirds of the original track list of Maiden England, including some songs they have not played live in a very long time, plus other favorites from throughout their catalogue.

“We always try to give our fans a great show musically, but we have always tried to make it as entertaining and memorable an experience as we can visually,” said Dickinson. “And we all feel this show is going to do that splendidly!”

Iron Maiden’s last offering of all new material was 2010′s The Final Frontier.

Cooper will be touring in support of his latest album, Welcome 2 My Nightmare. Released last September, Cooper’s 26th studio effort serves as a follow-up to his hit 1975 album, Welcome to My Nightmare. Produced by Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd), the album features an array of special guests including Vince Gill, Ke$ha, Rob Zombie, Kip Winger and Paterson Hood. Original Alice Cooper Band members Denis Dunaway, Michael Bruce and Neal Smith reunited on three tracks.

In an attempt to prevent ticket scalping, the tour will feature a paperless ticketing system for least the front sections of the venue. To enter the show, fans will go directly to the gate and present the credit card used to purchase the tickets and a valid ID to the ticket attendant. The attendant will scan the credit card to validate the order and present a seat locator slip for each ticket ordered. Since all the seats from the purchase are assigned to a single credit card, the purchaser’s entire party must be present to enter the venue. Paperless Tickets are non transferable.
